Today we went to the Acropolis!
The Acropolis was sadly getting new limestone pieces put into it, so there were some cranes and scaffolding around it. We walked up to it by taking a path that had a few little surprises of its own! The surprises were a lot of ruins on the hillside, including; a stadium that had so many seats, the stadium also had a tunnel at the back of the stadium going into the rocky hillside. Next we saw a bunch of columns that were standing in the middle of nowhere. We found out (by reading the signs) that the columns were actually part of a worshipping temple! And the last of the surprises that the path held for us, was… an even bigger stadium! This stadium could easily fit 700-1000 people!!! It had lots of archways and the stage had a decorated archway for the entrance.
Abi kept pointing to another ruin on a hill next to us, when I finally looked (as Abi put it) I thought it kind of looked like a church. Even though mum said this wasn’t the Acropolis’s busy time, I thought there were still quite a lot of people trying to enter the Acropolis!!! The Parthenon (the famous temple on top of the Acropolis) was so majestic, (or at least what was left of it was) as I had only seen it on stamps and TV shows, I thought it looked (and felt) much better to actually be there. We walked around for quite some time, looking at the other temples, watching this korean guy sketch the Parthenon from behind his back, (it was really good) but then this naughty boy made me tear my gaze away from the almost finished sketch of the Parthenon, to see this boy steal some of the Parthleon! (He got told off, but he got to keep the Parthenon piece!) After taking a lot of photos and selfies, we left the Acropolis. We then went to a humongous boulder that had been polished with everybody's shoes slipping on it, the boulder looked out over Ancient Agora. For lunch, we went to a fancy Greek restaurant to get Abi some gluten free traditional Greek food! Abi and mum got a Musaka (like a lasagne, but the pasta is swapped for overgines), Dad and I got some baked pita pockets with shredded pork and onions with tomato, it also had chips and Tzatziki! (Tzatziki is yoghurt with cucumber and garlic)
After a traditional Greek lunch, we went to the Acropolis museum! The Acropolis museum was full of only the artefacts that the archaeologists found at and on the Acropolis. They had cast most of the statues and wall pieces, but we saw lots (mostly every single one) of the original artefacts. We saw lots of statues, but my favourite thing was that there was graffiti in 500 BC!!! On the third level, there was even a full size steel model of the Parthenon! The people that worked at the museum had basically rebuilt the Parthenon inside! They had even put all the wall pieces that they found, in exactly the same spot they found them! The museum was very big and we found out that all the artefacts are clean, because the archaeologists laser them! We then said goodbye (for today) to the Acropolis and its museum. We went to a supermarket and got some food for dinner, we then went home to watch Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
TODAY WAS SO FUN!!! (and hot)
