IN FREEZING TEMPERATURES

9/2/2024

Today I woke up from a piece of snow falling on my face. You may be thinking; “how could snow be falling on Alex’s face?!” Well, I’ll say this one thing; I was in the Arctic Circle in my thermals with an arctic sleeping bag and under a metre of snow.

Oh! How could I forget! It was also -26° outside. I then had a need to pee. So I got my shoes/boots on and walked through the freezing hallways to the (luckily) heated bathroom.

The next time I woke up, was to someone pushing down on my feet. So I got up, to a nice warm cup of berry juice on my ice bedside table. The juice was yummy but the breakfast was going to be much better.

We had a buffet breakfast that came with the hotel booking, and we could smell it through a metre of snow. We then had to take our arctic sleeping bags back to the ‘warm room’ (it was for wimps that wouldn’t be able to stand the cold). We got all our ‘snow clothes’ on, and then went to fill up on breakfast. The breakfast held a massive variety of food and fruit, it had profiteroles, baked beans, lamb meatballs, nutella, pineapple, eggs, and so much more!

We had a delicious breakfast, but had to leave because we had a taxi to go to… Santa Claus Village!!! We got our taxi, and when we got there, we had a tour booked!

We only had 6 hours to; play in snow man world, have a husky ride, see Santa, go to the post office, take a photo of us with the giant thermometer, and have a buffet lunch that would be our dinner (we were all still full from breakfast).

We started by having our tour around the place, we saw where the husky tour would be located (from the signs, not the guide), the guide then showed us where we would be having our buffet lunch, and where Santa and the post office is located.

When the tour ended, we first went to snow man world. Snowman world wasn't actually that good at all, it only had one sledging slide, and a tiny labyrinth with no exit, it also had this super creepy mascot that would follow you around and copy what you did. Super weird.

We then walked to the buffet lunch, I saw three people slip over on the ice! We still weren't hungry, but that was going to be our dinner as well, so we ate till we were stuffed. (Not really, but almost).

We then waited for our tour guide to arrive because he said he would guide us to the husky ride. After waiting 15 minutes over the time he was supposed to arrive, we walked to the husky ride by ourselves. We went to the wrong husky ride place. So we walked to the other husky ride place. They had our 2.5 kl husky ride ready in minutes.

If I saw a husky dog poop on the run twice I would think anything but lucky, however that was what the guy steering our husky sleigh said. It was very fun and cool to be riding in the Arctic circle on a husky sleigh, it was really a once in a lifetime adventure.

After the husky sleigh ride, we went to see… Santa!!! To see Santa was like one of the queues to get on a ride at Disney Land! When we eventually got to see Santa, Abi gave him one of the cookies that we got on our husky ride. Santa even sang a song from New Zealand! It went like this; “tu taormina ewi, owe!, tato tato eeee, whia temaranghangi, mete!... It was very cool to hear Santa sing that, and I was awed that he knew the words!

After seeing Santa we went back to Snowman world (to get warm), and after a while our taxi arrived to take us home to the freezing Snow Hotel.

Tonight we were going to be sleeping in the GLASS IGLOO!!! So we would have a better chance of seeing the Aurora/Northern Lights.

PS: we didn’t see the Northern Lights because the air was too warm. Well at least we have a reason to come back. (;
